Lina Zedriga Steps In as Acting NUP President
Senior opposition figure Lina Zedriga Waru has taken over as the acting president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) following the temporary departure of the party’s leader Bobi Wine from Uganda.
Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, recently announced that he had left the country for a short period in order to continue what he described as his political struggle through international engagements.
In a video message shared on his social media platforms, the opposition leader explained that he plans to meet with friends and allies of Uganda abroad as part of efforts to advance the cause of democracy and freedom in the country.
To ensure the smooth running of party activities during his absence, Bobi Wine appointed Lina Zedriga to oversee the leadership of the party on an interim basis.
Zedriga is a long-time member of the National Unity Platform and previously served as the party’s vice president for Northern Uganda, where she has been actively involved in mobilization and political organization in the region.
Her appointment means she will temporarily coordinate party affairs, supervise leadership structures, and guide the party’s political activities while Bobi Wine is away.
The decision has been welcomed by several party supporters who view Zedriga as an experienced and dedicated member of the opposition movement.
The National Unity Platform has grown into one of the most influential opposition parties in Uganda since its formation, largely under the leadership of Bobi Wine, who emerged as a major political challenger to President Yoweri Museveni.
While Bobi Wine continues his engagements abroad, party officials say they expect Lina Zedriga’s interim leadership to maintain the party’s activities and mobilization efforts across the country until he returns.
