President Museveni Promises Public Universities and Industrial Growth for Sebei Region
President Yoweri Museveni has pledged to expand access to higher education and industrial development in the Sebei region, assuring residents that each zone will soon have at least one public university.
Speaking during his visit to Kween District, the President thanked locals for their warm welcome and emphasized his government’s commitment to decentralizing higher education.
“In the past, historical circumstances concentrated universities in Kampala,” Museveni said. “But now we shall build one for Sebei, Karamoja, and Bugisu.”
The President also expressed gratitude to the people of Sebei for offering 500 acres of land for the construction of an industrial park, saying it will become a major hub for jobs and production in the region.
Addressing the recent landslides that affected parts of eastern Uganda, Museveni revealed that UGX 56 billion has been allocated in the national budget for disaster preparedness. Each affected family, he said, will receive two acres of land and UGX 10 million in support.
However, he cautioned against continued settlement in high-risk mountain areas:
“Other countries with mountains face similar challenges. The sustainable way forward is to discourage settlement on the uplands. The lowlands should be for homes and business, while the highlands can support tourism and other economic activities.”
The President’s visit marks another step in the government’s ongoing efforts to promote balanced development and safeguard communities in Uganda’s mountainous regions.
