Tanzanian Influencer Niffer Jovin Faces Treason Charges Over TikTok Dance Video

A storm is brewing in Tanzania after popular businesswoman and influencer Niffer Jovin was hit with treason charges all over a TikTok dance video.

The viral clip, posted just days before the October 29th general elections, showed Jovin performing a trending dance challenge. However, authorities claim the song choice and timing carried political undertones that allegedly encouraged anti-government sentiment.

Under Tanzanian law, treason is one of the most serious crimes, carrying a possible life sentence if convicted. Jovin’s lawyers, however, argue that the video was purely entertainment and had no political intent, calling the charges an extreme overreach.

The case has since sparked widespread debate online, with many Tanzanians and rights groups warning that it represents a threat to digital freedom and creative expression in the country.
